Inside Oracle APEX by Patrick Wolf

17 Reasons why you shouldn't miss ODTUG Kaleidoscope this year!

The agenda of the ODTUG Kaleidoscope 2008 conference has just been released and it looks like that Oracle Application Express (APEX) has a massive presence at this conference.

On Sunday there is a full day symposium about The Seasoning of Application Express – Must Hear Success Stories and during the conference there are counted 17 presentations regarding Oracle APEX.

I compiled a list of them and what I have read in the abstracts, they look really promising, but see for yourself.
  • Building the New Stuff: AJAX, JSON, and APEX 3.1 by Carl Backstrom
  • Advanced Oracle Application Express Tips and Techniques by Bradley Brown
  • APEX Cheat Sheet 3 by Karen Cannell
  • Creating Advanced Charts in Oracle Application Express by Dimitri Gielis
  • APEX Versus ADF by Dimitri Gielis and Peter Ebell
  • APEX Development: Watch It Live by Bill Holtzman
  • Creating Dynamite Applications that Deliver by Kathy Hunsicker
  • Explore and Benefit the APEX Repository by Michiel Jonkers
  • Go Global with Oracle Application Express! By Joel Kallman
  • Migrating from Access to Oracle Application Express by Josh Millinger
  • How to Hack an Oracle Application Express Application by Anton Nielsen
  • Oracle Application Express (APEX) Version 3.1 by David Peake
  • Application Express in Support of Institutional Strategic Planning by Tanya Podchiyska
  • APEX Hints, Tips and Best Practices by John Scott
  • You Can't Do THAT in a Browser! Extending Oracle APEX with Third Party Components by Scott Spendolini

  • Increase Your Oracle APEX Development Productivity with Open Source Tools by Patrick Wolf
  • Application Express from a Forms Developer's Perspective by Andrew Woodward
Check out the agenda for more details.

Two of the presentations deal with the Oracle APEX Repository and I'm looking forward what they are coming up with, because I'm heavily using it in the ApexLib Framework and did myself a presentation last year in Germany covering that topic.

If you are interested in Oracle APEX, then you shouldn't miss this conference! And by the way, it's in New Orleans...

ODTUG Kaleidoscope '08 - Abstract Accepted

Just received a notification mail that my presentation titled

Increase Your Oracle APEX Development Productivity with Open Source Tools

has been accepted for the ODTUG Kaleidoscope 2008 conference.

The order of the mails I got from ODTUG was quite interesting.

Yesterday I got the "THE BIG EASY BULLETIN: Abstracts Selected" info mail, which I assume was sent out to all members of ODTUG and participants of the last conference. I was really surprised that I was featured as a speaker next to the big names in the Oracle community like Duncan Mills, Mark Rittman, Tom Kyte, Peter Koletzke, John Scott, Dimitri Gielis, Paul Dorsey and Steven Feuerstein.

And a few hours ago I got the "Invitation to Speak at ODTUG Kaleidoscope 2008" notification mail that I have been accepted as a speaker. :-)

Looking forward to see you in New Orleans!

Upcoming Events

Interested in learning more about Oracle Application Express (APEX)? Then you should attend one of the several conferences in the next few months.

September 23 - 26: SIOUG 07 by the Slovenian Oracle User Group (SIOUG)

Didn't know that the SIOUG is hosting such a big conference, according to the web site there will be about 500 to 750 people. I have to consider it for next year, because it isn't really far away from where I live (neighbor country). If I read it correctly (the content is in Slovenian) then there are two Oracle APEX presentations at that conference. See the conference schedule for details.

September 27: AOUG Jahrestagung 2007 by the Austrian Oracle User Group (AOUG)

It's just a small one day conference, but there are also two Oracle APEX presentations. See the conference schedule for details. If you like you can meet me there.

November 11 - 15: Oracle Open World 2007

There are a lot of Oracle APEX related presentations. According to a search I did I have found 13 presentations. I'm really looking forward to this conference. Hope to meet a lot of people I know from ODTUG and from the forum.

November 21 - 22: German Oracle User Conference by the German Oracle User Group (DOAG)

I have found 4 presentations on the schedule of this conference. One is done by me. It's called "Oracle APEX under the hood" and for which I have to write a summary this week. I haven't started yet... :-(

December 3 - 5: "many faces > one voice" by the UK Oracle User Group (UKOUG)

The agenda currently shows 13 presentations. Anthony Rayner blogged in detail about it. Check his blog for an overview of the Oracle APEX presentations.

Back in Town

I'm back home and finally found the time to do a short "Hallo" posting.

After a week without a computer, ok Dimitri shared his sometimes so that I could have a quick look at my e-mails, I must say I didn't miss it to much. Looks like that I'm not that much addicted from my computer as some thought ;-)

I even was not sure if I ever come back to Vienna, because my flight from Daytona Beach to Atlanta was really overbooked (about 5 seats) and until the last minute it was not clear if there are enough volunteers who trade there seat. But finally I got one. The flight back from Atlanta to Vienna was unspectacular and after about 9:20 hours with a little bit sleep I was back in town!

But no rest for me, because I was picked up by some friends of my hometown Grünau im Almtal, who come to Vienna to go to the Donauinselfest, one of the biggest festivals in Europe with about 2,6 million people in 3 days! So I just had a quick shower and I was on the track again. :-) That was probably not to bad, because that way I was active all the time and didn't think about the Jet-Lag. So we partied until 2 am, until they got tired :-)

ODTUG was really nice and interesting. Beside APEX I attended some presentations for SOA/BPEL, Oracle ADF and PL/SQL (Unit Testing). But meeting a lot of people you just know from the forum or via e-mail was really nice. Putting some faces to some names, like Dimitri, Joel, Mike, David, Scott, Raj, Flavio, Wilfred, Karen, ...

David Peake, me, Joel Kallman (BTW, David. Didn't notice that you are that tall!)

I spent most of the time with Dimitri, it was the first time that we personally met, so we hung out at the beach the hole Sunday.

Dimitri

I really enjoyed the stay in Daytona Beach. The only drawback was that I didn't had the opportunity to do a presentation there. For example the "The Power of the Oracle APEX Repository". But I'm sure, next year I will not miss the deadline.

On Dimitri's and Wilfred's blog you will find a more detailed summary of the ODTUG conference, also with some more pictures.

Hope to see you guys there next year too!

APEX Training days at ODTUG - Kaleidoscope 2007

Scott Spendolini just has published the abstracts for the APEX Training held during ODTUG Kaleidoscope 2007.

There are some topics on the agenda which really look interesting.

You should really consider going there, because there are also some interesting presentations on the ODTUG Conference agenda as well.

My last ODTUG conference I attended was back 2001 in San Diego, man that's already a long time ago! At that time I was much younger... :-)
